On this page I am gathering together many of the snippets of information that I require prior to servicing my 300 Tdi Defender 90.  I hope the information is of some use to you also.

300Tdi Engine - Oil Change - Under Construction!
Method
  • Go for a short drive to warm the oil.
  • Park up on level ground.
  • Remove the oil filler cap from the top of the engine
  • Position the oil drain pan below the sump plug - be aware that the oil will shoot out almost horizontally at first.
  • Remove the sump plug and allow to drain.
  • Loosen the oil filter a couple of turns
  • Fill a plastic bag with newspaper and position the bag (and newspaper) under/around the filter.
  • Continue unscrewing the filter until it comes away into the bag - this will reduce the mess (a bit).
  • Leave the engine to drain completely
  • Wipe some clean oil round the rubber seal on the new oil filter and fit.
  • Fit a new copper sealing washer and refit and torque up the sump drain plug.
  • Slowly fill the engine and replace the oil filler cap.
  • Clean up - job done.

R380 Gearbox - Oil Change
Method

  • Go for a short drive to warm the oil - not too far as you dont wan't boiling oil pouring down your arm.
  • Park up on level ground.
  • The gearbox filler and drain plugs are on the drivers side of the car (for RHD vehicles).
  • Clean the area around the plugs to stop grit and muck from getting into the box.
  • Remove the filler plug first ( you dont want to drain the box only to find you can't fill it - old oil is better than no oil).  Some will probably escape so have your drain pan at the ready.
  • Position the oil drain pan below the drain plug - a large drip tray is also a good idea.
  • Remove the drain plug- the oil will pour onto the cross-member and spread out (hence the need for a drip tray)
  • Leave the oil to drain for about 10 mins - this gives you time to clean the plugs.
  • Clean the plugs - use a new washer on the drain plug and I used PTFE tape around the drain plug to stop drips.
  • Fit the drain plug.
  • Slowly fill the box with oil 'till it comes back out of the filler hole - filling is awkward as there is little space - I use a 1litre syringe with a plastic pipe on the end.
  • Fit the filler plug.
  • Clean up - job done.
