The drain plug washers (Part Number - FTC4112)  arrived today from Britcar - can now change the gearbox oil... Time and weather permitting!

Obviously you only need one washer - I decided to get a couple of spares for next time.

Service Tools - Ordered Socket and Washers

Just ordered new a plinth for the number plate light - Part Number - 345597

some gearbox drain plug washers - Part Number - FTC4112

and a Sealey Low Profile Oil Filter Socket 32mm 3/8" Drive (thanks to caffn8me - from the Land Rover UK Forum for spotting this).

I'm hoping this should allow me to torque up the R380 drain plug properly.

Alloy Wheels - Paint Codes

Have been looking paint codes so I can touch-up the alloys I have just bought. The codes for the touch-up crayons are:

The edges are Silver Sparkle - STC8927VT and,
the grey centres are Arken Grey - RTC6454VT

found these on the very useful page:

Dingocroft Paint Codes.  Thanks to Dingocroft for this resource

NOTE these may well be the codes for the small touch-up pots - rather than crayons so beware!

R380 Gearbox Oil

The oil for my R380 gearbox arrived from Ashcroft Transmissions today.

It is well packaged and arrived fairly quickly.  Am happy so far.

Alloy Wheels - Collected Them Today

Collected my new (to me) Freestyle alloy wheels today.  They were an ebay bargain at £143, and are in much better condition than I thought they might be.

They at least 10 years old so a little corrosion and a few scuff marks are to be expected - I was very happy to find no other damage so am well pleased.

Just need to give them a proper clean and then choose which tyres to buy!

R380 Gearbox - Notchy Gearchange Again

So the Difflock products are getting a bit too rich for my pocket...

Had a look on Ashcroft Transmissions for info - it seems they have started doing their own range of oils, so I thought I'd give their Revolution 1 a go.  They describe it as  it is a Fully Synthetic Quality Gear Oil, suitable for the LT77, R380, ZF Auto and Borg Warner boxes.

It still wasn't cheap, but at £46.20 including VAT and P&P, it is nearly twenty quid cheaper than the equivalent Difflock product!

Will do the oil change next week when I have some spare time and see if it improves things.

Notchy Gearchange

The change from first to second has been getting a little notchy of late so I reckon its about time I changed the gearbox oil.

Now in the past I have used Difflock Evolution 1 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil.  It is great stuff and I would recommend it to anyone.  So I went on Difflock's site to order some.

It has gone up to £17.83 a litre.  Well that is pricey, but I was prepared to pay it, until....they added VAT and P&P.

I don't like to seem tight but £65.99 for three litres of oil is just too much!

Time to look around for a different product

Alloy Wheels

Have just won an ebay auction for a set of new (to me) alloy wheels.

One of my favourite Landys of all time is the NAS spec Defender so, in an attempt to replicate the look, I have purchased a set of Freestyle alloy wheels.

These particular ones are from an ES Discovery, so are the same charcoal grey colour as those seen on the 50th anniversary Defender.

I am going to collect them on Monday.  Hopefully the vendor's definition of the phrase "the wheels are in great shape" is close to mine.

Duralac - Corrosion Inhibiting Sealant

Just been on the LandyZone forum and spotted a post by LeadFarmer (credit where it's due..) describing a corrosion inhibiting sealant.

From their website (http://www.intek-uk.com/duralac.htm)

Description
Duralac DTD369B is a chromate containing jointing compound designed to inhibit electrolytic decomposition between dissimilar metals – often called galvanic corrosion.  It is a single pack, air setting product.

Uses
Duralac is indispensable for the sealing of joints between dissimilar metals including magnesium and its alloys.

For example Duralac may be used:
- Between aluminium alloy plates/extrusions and bolts or rivets used in building applications
- In general engineering applications where dissimilar contact cannot be avoided
- In vehicle building where aluminium alloy contacts steel
- For marine application where corrosion is accelerated by brine concentration
- In close proximity to the sea where salt will meet with structures and set up electrolytic cells
- In Aerospace where rivets/bolts are secured into aluminium plates.

Sounds like good stuff - will give it a go next time I need to bond a panel, re-skin a door, etc....

Bulkhead Removal Bar - Nuts and Bolts

Originally I wanted all the proper Land Rover nuts and bolts to do the job.

After posting on LR4x4.com, a poster was kind enough to reply with most of the following picture.  I am filling in the part numbers as I get them:

item 9 =  bolt torx head M10 x 30mm
item 10 = WA110065 Flat Washer M10
item ?? = SH110251L Hex Head Bolt M10 X 25mm Fully Threaded
item 13 = WA110061L Washer M10
item 15 = WA600071L Washer

As it turns out Part18 is in exactly the same place as the bolt used for holding the seat belt in place.  So, I used that instead.  I also ended up using a bunch of M10 x 30mm nuts and bolts which did the job just fine.

Will update these part numbers for reference(when I get chance)....

Rough Tote Boxes

Bought a couple of Rough Tote boxes from B&Q.  These fit nicely atop the wheel boxes and provide a way to stop stuff rolling about the floor.  At about £17.50 each they are not cheap but they are a lot more robust than the previous black plasic crates - these split and fell apart in no time.

Used a bungee round each box to hold em.  The cappings have a number of holes pre-drilled, so I hooked the ends of the bungees into them.  The bungees seem plenty strong enough to hold the boxes still, even when fully laden.

Blogging

My Project D90 website was around for several years but was never up to date.

So in an attempt to make a more useful and up to date record of my landrovery stuff, I have decided to get into this blogging malarkey.

I will hopefully be keeping this up to date and will import all the posts from my old site as I get chance.

Happy reading

Tod

Bulkhead Removal Bar Arrives

The removal bar arrived today – looks fine.  Just need to source some nuts and bolts for it now.
